Currently in Nigeria, sexual activity among same-sex is illegal and punishable by up to 14 years imprisonment. In the 12 Northern states which have adopted Shari’a law, homosexual activity is punishable by stoning and there is no legal protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation. In addition, legislation is pending to criminalize same-sex marriage throughout Nigeria.
A survey conducted by NOI Polls shows that awareness of homosexual relationships amongst Nigerians is low, with over 7 in 10 saying ‘No” when asked ‘Are you aware of same sex/gay/homosexual relationships in your community?

Nearly all (96%) of those quizzed also stated that they are not in support of homosexual relationships.

The major reason offered for the lack of support of homosexual relationships is that they are ungodly (42%), an abomination (28%) and against our culture (8%).
